Brian Hart is an expert in domestic and global intellectual property (IP) and IP-related matters pertaining to several industries, including ones as diversified as electrical and mechanical engineering, software and the Internet, telecommunications, medical devices, robotics, biotech, materials and nanotechnology, oil and gas, alternative energy, transportation, and university research.
It is Mr. Hart’s IP law experience combined with an extensive background in engineering and geophysics, that have enabled him to guide and counsel global corporate giants and start-ups alike on a wide variety of matters, including patents; trademarks; trade secrets; copyright; opinions; licensing, collaboration, employee and non-disclosure agreements; unfair competition; IP audits and due diligence; strategically planning for and managing IP portfolios to align with business plans; technology transfer; IP in government contracts (FAR, DFAR, DEAR, NSF); export control; data privacy; and international IP-related conventions, agreements and treaties.
Mr. Hart augments his practice with detailed working knowledge of computer science, including: microprocessor and memory architectures, signal and image processing, operating systems, command control systems, cryptography, security, runtimes, networking and communication protocols, Internet technologies, databases and data storage technologies, user interface design, and numerous computer programming languages, among many other areas.
Prior to launching Hart IP, Mr. Hart was a Partner in an AmLaw 100 Firm based in Washington D.C., and held previous positions at two boutique IP firms located in Palo Alto, California and Denver, Colorado.
Before practicing law, Mr. Hart worked as a senior computer software engineer in several industries including computer (Xerox Palo Alto Research Center [Xerox PARC]), networking/telecommunications (SynOptics/Nortel Networks), geophysics, oil, and gas (PetroVision, Inc.), and defense (e.g., Litton Advanced Systems, GTE Government Systems, Vitro Labs Advanced Technologies and IBM Federal Systems).
As a Department of Defense (DoD) contractor, Mr. Hart developed embedded radar and communications software solutions for electronic warfare, Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft systems, aerial vehicles, submarine warning and defense Systems, domestic air traffic control, and other control and command systems.

- Represents corporations and advanced research facilities based in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Middle East on patent and IP-related matters.
- Represents telecom industry’s third largest multinational mobile phone service provider on patent and other IP-related business matters.
- Provides satellite services industry’s second largest provider in U.S. with patent application preparation and prosecution services.
- Manages Italian espresso machine manufacturer’s global trademark and patent portfolio.
- Domestically and abroad, Mr. Hart has led several IP and IP-related seminars and workshops directed to understanding and implementing best practices to achieve knowledge-based initiatives in view of national and international IP frameworks, agreements, and legislation.
- Helped establish operations for a new IP legal services company in New Delhi, India.
